Coagulation Analyzer
Coagulation analyzers, also known as coagulometers, are laboratory instruments designed to measure the time it takes for blood to clot. These devices are essential for evaluating the coagulation status of patients and monitoring anticoagulant therapy.
Applications:
· Hemostasis Assessment:
Description: Coagulation analyzers are used to assess hemostasis, which is the body's ability to stop bleeding when a blood vessel is injured. They help diagnose bleeding disorders, such as hemophilia and von Willebrand disease.
Hashtags: #Hemostasis #BloodClotting #BleedingDisorders #CoagulationAnalysis
· Anticoagulant Therapy Monitoring:
Description: Coagulation analyzers play a vital role in monitoring patients on anticoagulant therapy, such as those taking warfarin or direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). Regular testing helps ensure that the blood's clotting ability remains within the desired range.
Hashtags: #AnticoagulantTherapy #WarfarinMonitoring #DOACs #BloodThinning
· Thrombosis Risk Assessment:
Description: These analyzers are used to assess the risk of thrombosis (blood clots) in patients. They can identify conditions that predispose individuals to excessive clot formation.
Hashtags: #ThrombosisRisk #BloodClotRisk #ClotFormation #CoagulationAssessment
· Liver Disease Evaluation:
Description: Coagulation analyzers help assess liver function, as liver diseases can affect blood clotting. Tests like the prothrombin time (PT) and international normalized ratio (INR) are common in this context.
Hashtags: #LiverDisease #CoagulationTests #PTINR #LiverFunction
· Surgery Planning:
Description: Surgeons use coagulation analyzers to evaluate a patient's blood clotting ability before surgery. This helps prevent excessive bleeding during and after the procedure.
Hashtags: #SurgeryPlanning #CoagulationAssessment #BloodClottingEvaluation #SurgicalSafety
Details:
Coagulation analyzers use various tests, including activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), prothrombin time (PT), and fibrinogen assays, to assess blood clotting. These tests provide valuable information about clot formation and fibrinolysis.

CoaguChek XS PT Test strips (in a vial):
- Box with 2 vials of 24 strips each with a code chip
- Box with 1 vial of 24 strips with a code chip FAQ
What is the recommended test frequency?
- At least twice per month, preferably once per week. This has proven to increase TTR by enabling faster reactions to variations in INR due to exercise and diet. It also increases patient compliance and engagement.
What is time in therapeutic range (TTR)?
- The percentage of time that your patients INR values fell within the upper and lower target value set by you.
Do the CoaguChek XS systems need calibration?
- No, calibration is performed automatically upon inserting the code key from the strip vial.
- What steps can I take when the readings are different to the hospital lab?
- Due to diverse measurement standards used by labs, small variations should be expected. If the variation is of therapeutic significance, please contact your local Roche support organization.
Why cant I perform a liquid quality control?
- The meter has a built in internal quality control so liquid controls are not needed.
Why are strips not single sealed as with CoaguChek S?
- Single sealing of strips is done to prevent the chemistry from moisture and light, and to maintain a shelf life as long as possible. However, it is less convenient for the customer and more expensive for the manufacturer. Each test strip vial consists of a stopper with desiccant which prevents the test strips from moisture and light.
Are there interferences when testing with CoaguChek systems?
- Polyglobulism: Hematocrit outside the standard range (25 - 55 %)
- Lupus anticoagulant: INR abnormally high
- The presence of anti-phospholipid antibodies (APAs) such as Lupus antibodies (LA) can potentially lead to prolonged clotting times, i.e. elevated INR values. A comparison to an APA-insensitive laboratory method is recommended if the presence of APAs is known or suspected.
Does the user have to run the test immediately after taking the strip out of the vial?
- The open vial stability is 10 minutes maximum. Having the strip too long out of the vial, especially in situations with high humidity or temperature, would be detected by the onboard integrity system resulting in an error message. No INR would be displayed if the strips are found to be defective by the integrated quality control of the CoaguChek XS system.
What happens if the user does not change the code key?
- If the incorrect code key is in the machine, the PT/INR value may be incorrect. Depending on the lot variation, the error can be significant causing the wrong therapeutic decision to be taken with an adverse health effect.
In what way does the CoaguChek XS PT test differ from the CoaguChek S PT test
Beside the mentioned technology the differences are:
- top and side dosing capability,
- strip storage at room temperature,
- extended % Quick measuring range,
- the low ISI value of 1.0,
- insensitivity at therapeutic levels
- and the onboard single-channel control system (OS2C) = integrity check on each strip in the same channel where blood passes, which makes it unnecessary to run liquid controls.
